10.1b - Clandestyne by Gaslight

"Our world has changed radically in the last two years. Gods die and gods are born. The stars come down to Earth, and the walls of the world are broken down, allowing strange creatures and people to walk under the night sky.

"Some of us ponder recent events, and shudder, Some of us remember that this has happened before.

"My time in this land of the dead has dulled the edge of memory, mon ami, but I was there in the dark days of the last century. The year 1899 was the death of me; and I left this mortal coil not knowing whether the world would be there when I returned."

-letter of Aidan Farlander to Dr Rania Helewan

1899 In the last years of the 19th century, the world was on the brink of the modern age. In New York City, the Windsor Hotel goes up in flames, causing millions in damage and killing fourteen. A single photograph, taken by a visitor at the Windsor Hotel, reveals the blurred image of a figure wearing a dark cassock and a hideous, indescrible mask. In the same year, strange yellow worms are found strewn across an Alaskan glacier. In a cave in Amorica, Pliocene cave paintings are discovered by French school children, inexplicably mingled with Arabian script:

la mayyitan ma qadirun yatabaqa sarmadi
fa itha yaji ash-shuthath al-mautu qad yantahi
al-khadhulu haipezamendiu

The world is as yet unaware. But unnatural forces are moving, and the time is right...
